Sometimes it seems like all we hear is bad news. While this is true some days, there is a little bit of good news out there. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration totaled up the number of traffic fatalities in 2017 and found that there was a 2% decrease! While this may not seem like a significant amount, it does reverse a troubling trend in fatalities in recent years. After all, in 2015, there was an 8.4% increase in traffic fatalities and in 2016 there was a 6.5% increase. So why was 2017 a safer year?
Safety experts aren’t sure why there was a reduction in the number of traffic fatalities. Some cite safety programs for increasing awareness about the dangers of distracted driving, drunk driving, and reckless driving. Others cite the fact that automobiles have rolled out some impressive safety features in recent years that have helped reduce fatalities drastically. No matter why the decrease occurred, this is certainly good news for all drivers.
What About Denver Roads?
While nationally, are roads may be a little safer, Denver streets aren’t quite as good. People are still getting killed in pedestrians, bicycling, and car accidents every day in the Denver metro area and a new report has given city leaders a “C” grade for not fixing these problems in 2018. The report praised the city for adding nearly 20 miles of bike lanes but noted that it fell short when it came to advanced pedestrian crossings, street lighting and other types of life-saving street safety measures. In Denver alone, there were 59 traffic fatalities in 2018.
