This was Britain’s first fatal collision involving an electric scooter.
Hartridge rose to popularity on her YouTube page where she often posted videos in listicle form, such as “Top 10 Reasons Why…” Her topics ranged from personal pieces regarding her sexuality and her mental health to funnier public videos about sex, relationships, and life. Her last video was titled “10 Reasons to Get a Younger Boyfriend” and it was based on her own personal life experiences.
Hartridge had a large public following on multiple social media sites, including Instagram where she had more than 70k followers. Her followers mourned her passing publicly and by all accounts, this was a tragedy that should’ve never occurred.
Electric Scooters can be Dangerous
Electric scooters can go as fast as 15 mph, and no one wears helmets when riding them. In fact, just 4% of riders wear a helmet. This makes them an extremely dangerous form of transportation.
A study published in JAMA found that 250 people ended up in emergency rooms in Los Angeles in 2017. The most common injuries were to rider’s heads, with more than 40% sustaining a brain injury. Two of those riders sustained such severe injuries that they had to be taken to the ICU.
When Portland, Oregon began tracking their electric scooter injuries, they found that during a four-month period, scooter accidents caused more than 176 emergency room visits. 83% of these accidents resulted from a rider falling off the scooter and suffering an injury. Only 6 of those accidents occurred to a rider wearing a helmet. 16% of those scooter accidents involved a drunk rider.
If you are considering riding an electric scooter in Denver, it is important to understand the dangers and take necessary safety precautions. Always wear a helmet and obey all scooter speed limits.
