A trucking accident on I-70 has resulted in numerous injuries and fatalities. The semi-truck, driven by 23 year-old Texan, Rogel Lazaro Aguilera-Merderon, caused a fiery 28 vehicle accident on I-70 near Lakewood on Thursday evening that resulted in four confirmed fatalities.
Police say the driver either was unable or unwilling to stop his truck, before it slammed into a number of cars sitting in traffic due to a separate accident that had occurred about a mile further up the highway. The resulting chain reaction of collisions quickly ignited an intense fire that reportedly burned as hot as 2,500 degrees Fahrenheit, igniting diesel fuel and lumber spilled by the truck, and even melting aluminum.
Multiple injuries were reported, including an injured firefighter who was working on the crash scene and hit by flying debris, possibly from a nearby exploding tire. The driver, who suffered minor injuries, was released from the hospital into police custody, and is now facing four charges of vehicular homicide.
While the police are unsure why Aguilera-Merderon did not stop his truck before the accident, they have ruled out intoxication as a cause.
A YouTube blogger identified as “Burger Planet” caught tense footage of the truck speeding down the highway next to his car, and of the resulting accident damage.
I-70 Eastbound 6th Ave – 32nd Ave is to remain closed to traffic into Saturday due to the investigation of the accident, and the extensive repair work required. The overpass bridge on that section of I-70 has reportedly suffered extensive damage as well.
Trucking Accidents Have Devastating Results
Devastating trucking accidents, such as this one, not only leave a wake of physical destruction, they cause a great deal of personal destruction as well, with families left unsure of what their futures may hold, and injured survivors who may be facing a lifetime of chronic pain and disability, and expensive medical bills.
“Some staff members from our law firm saw exactly what occurred on interstate 70 yesterday evening. While the cause of this accident is currently unknown, we know the police are working as hard as possible to determine exactly what happened.” says Denver attorney Greg Gold. “There are cameras all over that area, so there will be ample footage available to help explain what caused this horrible accident. If the accident was caused by the negligent actions of the driver, or a lack of due diligence on the part of the trucking company, then there is a legal obligation to make whole what has been lost, as much as that’s possible.”
After a Commercial Trucking Accident
After an accident such as this, it is imperative that survivors and families effected by the tragedy seek the help of a competent trucking accident attorney. The right attorney will do anything and everything to see that no stone is left unturned when reconstructing what happened in an accident. And that’s important. Evidence can be harder to come by as time goes on, so it’s necessary to act quickly in order to obtain all evidence that may help explain what caused such a tragedy, and determine who is responsible.
