20+ Hit-and-Runs, Few Arrests
2019 has been a bad year for hit-and-run accidents in Denver, with an average of more than 2 people being seriously injured in accidents each month. In more than half of the incidents, police have been unable to make an arrest. The low arrest rate is often due to the fact that it’s so difficult to identify a driver who has fled the scene. Even when there is security camera footage available of the accident, this footage often does not provide enough information to identify the car, its license plate, much less the driver. Also, those left at the scene have often been injured, or are experiencing shock due to the often suddenness of these types of accidents, and weren’t in a position to observe much of the accident, or the resulting escape.
An Increasing Problem?
According to a AAA Foundation analysis, hit-and-run accidents and their related fatalities have been increasing. 737,100 hit-and-run accidents occurred in 2015, or roughly one of these types of accidents every 43 seconds in the U.S. In 2016 there were 2,049 fatalities resulting from hit-and-run accidents, the highest number recorded at the time of the analysis.
Whether it’s the steep increase in distracted driving, an increase in intoxicated driving, or some other reason, hit-and-run accidents are a serious problem.
What Can be Done in a Hit-and-Run?
