According to the police, multiple people were injured in Colorado Springs by a suspected DUI driver on Sunday.
The traffic accident occurred around 7:20 p.m. on the evening of February 9th, when a car driven by Alex Nelson ran a red light and collided into another vehicle.
The accident occurred at the intersection of Chelton Road and Astrozon Boulevard. Police responded to the scene of the crash, and after assessing the situation, arrested Nelson on suspicion of driving while intoxicated.
Multiple people had to be taken to the hospital as a result of the accident, and the intersection was closed to traffic for multiple hours, reopening before the Monday commute.
Criminal and Civil Cases Against Drunk Drivers are Different
While a driver who has caused an accident while driving intoxicated will face criminal charges, that is a different scenario from a civil personal injury case that can be pursued against that driver. Just because a driver may face criminal charges, that does not prevent accident victims from pursuing a civil claim. In fact, if the drunk driver is convicted, that can actually work to bolster the civil claim.
On top of that, in many DUI accident law suits, judges award ‘punitive damages’ to the injured party. These are monetary damages above and beyond money paid to the injured person in order to compensate them for loss and injury, and are meant to punish the drunk driver in order to discourage the behavior in the future.
