Two people were killed and thirteen were injured in a tragic Pueblo church bus accident last Sunday.
While making it’s way back to New Mexico from a trip to the Steubenville Catholic Youth Conference in Denver, the bus, carrying 10 high school students and five adult church members, apparently ran into a bridge embankment almost 50 miles south of the Colorado Springs area.
Only five of the 15 passengers were still on the bass when fire crews arrived, according to the Pueblo Fire Chief, and they had to be cautiously removed from the bus due to unstable, possibly dangerous conditions.
Of the two passengers who tragically died at the scene, one was Jason Paul Marshall, a seminarian of the Archdiocesse of Santa Fe, and the other, named Anthony Padilla, was the bus driver.
With injuries varying from minor to critical, twelve passengers were taken to Pueblo area hospitals and one was flown to a hospital in Colorado Springs.
The cause of the accident is still unknown at this time, but authorities say it may have involved a medical issue with the driver. Police are asking that anyone who witnessed the accident call 719-544-2424.
When Bus Accidents Occur
Accidents occur all the time where there is no blame to assign; there’s no one person who caused the accident. But accidents occur all the time as well, where the cause of the accident can be attributed to an act of negligence. Negligent actions can occur anywhere in the chain of command of a transportation, or transportation related company. Corners are sometimes cut, shortcuts are sometimes taken. Sometimes cost saving measures have tragic results. Some common causes of bus accidents include:
- Defective equipment
- Improper maintenance
- Dangerous road conditions
- Reckless driving
- Intoxicated driving
When negligent actions result in tragic accidents that effect the lives of innocent people, the responsible party has a legal obligation to make whole what was broken. Bus accident related injuries can mean a lifetime of very expensive medical bills. And in the extremely unfortunate event of the loss of a loved one, while nothing can bring that loved one back, a mourning family should not have to contend with the difficult financial situation that can result from the loss of that family member’s income. An experienced accident attorney that understands these types of accidents and how to pursue these types of legal claims, will fight to protect the legal rights of accident injury victims and their family members.
