Buying a car costs money – lots of money. Once you finally purchase a car, the rising cost of car insurance may be enough to keep that car off the road for a long time. As a result, new drivers are waiting too long to hit the road after passing their driving test. This means that by the time they do finally start driving, many of them don’t remember the basic rules of the road. Even worse, this can lead to an increased risk of being injured in a serious accident. This begs the question: could rising car costs mean more crashes?
According to a new study, more than a quarter of young drivers believe that their accident was a direct result of spending too much time away from driving after initially passing their driver’s test. In fact, more than 25% of young drivers under the age of thirty years old have spent six months or longer without driving. This time off is having a significant impact on their confidence behind the wheel and their ability to avoid an accident.
While this study was conducted in the UK, young teen drivers here in the U.S. are feeling the pinch of car costs as well. In Colorado, the average cost to insure a car with basic liability protection was $1,359 a year or $113 a month. Denver is the most expensive city in Colorado to purchase car insurance with an average cost that is 29% higher than the rest of the state. Here, drivers pay an average of $1,758 a year for car insurance.
Since car insurance in Denver can be costly, young drivers may opt out of driving altogether for a few months. This inexperience can make them more dangerous on the road when they finally do start driving. In addition to delayed driving, rising auto insurance costs increases the number of uninsured drivers on the road. It is estimated that at least 13% of drivers on the road are uninsured motorists.
