Sexual assault affects everyone. It affects men, women, and children from every socio-economic and cultural background. It knows no limits. In fact, according to RAINN, 1 out of every 6 women and 1 out of every 33 men have been victims of an attempted or completed rape. According to Child Protective Services, every single year, 63,000 children become victims of sexual assault. Even more concerning is that the real sexual assault statistics are even higher because many victims never come forward.
What is Sexual Assault in Colorado?
In the state of Colorado, sexual assault is addressed in Colorado Revised Statutes Sections 18-3-402: Sexual Assault, and 18-3-404: Unlawful Sexual Contact. It is defined as any sexual contact that is unwanted or performed without consent. This can include unwanted sexual touching, as well as being made to perform or being forced to endure unwanted sexual acts. It also includes sexual acts with victims who are incapable of understanding the sexual acts, such as a child or an intoxicated, unconscious, or mentally disabled individual. It also includes engaging in sexual activity while claiming to be performing a medical service, such as a pelvic examination or a massage. It also includes someone who has authority over another person, such as in a prison or hospital, and who uses that authority to coerce another into submission.
You Don’t Have to Suffer in Silence
Sadly, many sexual assault victims remain silent due to fear. They fear that speaking up may cause them to lose relationships or even their jobs. For many, the pain of reliving the traumatic event is simply too much to bear, so they remain silent. The ones who do speak up are sadly often met with disbelief or prejudice and they are often pressured into keeping silent to avoid bad publicity or to avoid “rocking the boat”.
You do not have to suffer in silence. If you have been a victim of sexual assault, it is important to know that you are not alone.
