According to the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety, the smallest late-model cars available on the market are also the most dangerous vehicles you can buy.
The IIHS looked at the most recent driver fatality rate data available, and determined that small cars and minicars made up 15 of the 20 models that had the highest death rates of all 2017 model year vehicles.
According to Joe Nolan, the IIHS senior vice president of vehicle research, “Smaller vehicles offer less protection for the driver in crashes, and their lighter mass means that they take the brunt of collisions with larger vehicles.”
The vehicles with the overall lowest death rate in any vehicle category were large SUVs, like the GMC Yukon XL. Large SUVs were shown to have 15 fatalities per million registered vehicle years, while minicars had 82.
The worst performer in the minicar category, with 141 fatalities per million registered vehicle years, was the Ford Fiesta.
Even though the numbers above don’t look great for small cars, the fact is new model small cars are the safest they’ve ever been, thanks to the many great advancements made in vehicle safety over the last decade.
IIHS data shows that regardless of vehicle size, the odds of dying in a crash are relatively low. Also, with each advancing year, the odds of surviving a crash go up. From 2005 to 2015, IIHS data shows that the actual number of deaths per million registered vehicle years actually decreased 56% in the minicar category, and dropped 57% for small cars.
So, there’s no need to rush out and buy an SUV. What matters isn’t really what you’re driving, it’s how you’re driving. Don’t speed, and don’t drive distracted. The best way to improve your odds of surviving an accident, is to avoid accidents altogether.
