Last month on Christmas Eve, a woman in downtown Aspen was hit by an SUV while on the Cooper Avenue and Galena Street pedestrian mall, shortly after 1 p.m.
While police are still investigating the accident at the time of this writing, they believe that the driver “accidentally accelerated past stopped traffic, up onto the mall walking area” and struck the woman, who was seriously injured.
Fortunately, at the time of the accident, the Aspen Police Department was hosting an event for the public in an area on the mall near the Paradise Bakery, so there were multiple officers in the area available to render aid to the accident victim.
The woman was sent to the hospital for treatment of multiple serious, but not life threatening injuries. The driver is facing charges, and this incident may act as a catalyst that convinces the city to put up protective barriers on the mall, something they’ve been considering.
