National Poison Prevention Week

Posted on May 08, 2013 in Uncategorized

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission celebrates the National Poison Prevention Week each year in an effort to educate people about the dangers of household chemicals and medications. The program, which began over 50 years ago, is the longest running public health initiative. It has been behind public awareness campaigns for issues such as locking cabinets that contain cleaning solutions, keeping all medicines out of children's reach, and the design and creation of child-proof caps on both medicines and household chemicals. At the time that National Poison Prevention Week was conceived, over 400 children died from accidental poisoning each year across the country. Now, that number has been reduced to around 40.
